The habit of clenching teeth is a disorder that reduces the quality of life of the person. Although mild clenching cases do not require any treatment, frequent and severe clenching cases must be treated.

If the clenching problem cannot be solved psychologically, there are some treatments to be applied under dentistry. While these treatments are carried out with a small botox procedure on the chewing muscle according to the level of discomfort of the person, the problems that occur as a result of clenching are eliminated by making silicone or hard plaques called night plaques in the mouth.

Causes of Clenching Disease

While dental disease can occur for many reasons, the most common cause is stress. Fatigue and weakness felt upon awakening, pain in the jaw muscles, abrasions and fractures in the teeth can be shown as symptoms of bruxism. Most of the time, patients themselves are not aware of this disease, which is manifested by strong jaw movements that occur during sleep, and is also seen as tooth contact that occurs outside of chewing and swallowing.

How Is Bruxism Diagnosed?

Since bruxism is mostly seen during sleep, patients do not realize that they have this disorder. This ailment can be diagnosed at the end of the oral, dental and jaw joint examination by the dentist. In cases where teeth grinding progresses, joint pain can be confused with ear pain, and muscle pain can be confused with migraine pain. In such cases, an alternative diagnosis can be made by an otolaryngologist or neurologist.

Clenching Disease Symptoms

  • Over time, your teeth wear and ache.
  • Cracks, fractures and displacement problems may occur in the teeth.
  • Traces of teeth appear around the tongue and white lines appear on the inside of the cheek.
  • Fatigue, weakness and pain in the head, neck and face muscles occur in the body.
  • Sounds may come from the tooth and jaw joint.
  • The tip of the chin and the tip of the nose approach each other, the lower face height decreases.
  • The lower jaw moves forward over time and a concave profile image occurs. In this case, an angular and square face appearance is formed.

Treatment Methods of Clenching Disease

There are multiple treatment methods for teeth clenching. The aim of these treatments is to relieve pain and prevent permanent damage to patients' teeth and jaw joint.

In the treatment of bruxism, a specially prepared night plate is used during sleep at night. However, in some cases, night plaque is not an adequate treatment alone, so additional treatments are required.

In addition to clenching treatments, stress therapy, muscle relaxants, restoration of incorrectly made dental fillings and veneers, and placement of dentures in place of missing teeth are also effective for treatment. In addition, the application of masseter botox applied to the jaw muscles for the treatment of teeth clenching is also extremely beneficial.

Masseter Botox (Chin Botox) Application

Clenching (bruxism) is the habit of clenching the teeth unconsciously while awake or asleep. When teeth grinding becomes chronic and its severity increases, it causes pain at a level that will negatively affect the daily life of the person. In fact, some bruxism patients often wake up with jaw pain from their sleep. Clenching discomfort causes a square chin appearance in the person over time. In cases where clenching cases are severe, botox injections applied to the muscles can prevent the muscles that cause sleep bruxism from being paralyzed and teeth grinding. Masseter botox application can provide tremendous relief to patients. Masseter botox method, which has very effective results in clenching disease, should be repeated every 6 months.

Night Plaque

Transparent appliances, which are prepared in a laboratory environment and applied mostly to the upper jaw, after the dentist takes the measurement of their teeth in patients with teeth clenching, are called night plaques. Clenching of the teeth during sleep can cause wear on the teeth and tension-type pain in the head and neck muscles. Thanks to the night plate, these complaints are reduced.

Medication

With the advice of the dentist, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can be preferred for the relief of swelling or associated with clenching disease. In some cases, drug therapy may also be recommended to relax the muscle. Thanks to the muscle relaxants used, the jaw muscles are rested and tension is reduced. Thus, the symptoms of clenching and grinding are reduced.
